Mixed Media

I have not decided if this is finished yet. I was playing around with it is so it is a small piece. 10X8 canvas panel. What I am not very happy with, is that the patina I used over the page to tone done the color makes it look dirty instead of old. I'm thinking of going over with dribbles or pour but am not quite sure. I would never tear a page out of an old book but this book was already very torn and had no salvation. Unfortunately it is a 19th century Theology book and I would not want to use it disrespectfully. 10x8 canvas panel and ribbon, acrylic, feather, sumi, ink and oil.

Mary - I know this problem of paintings looking "grubby" after a glaze! I find a very thin glaze of transparent colour can put this right ... I use Atelier's Red Gold for this (this is NOT a metallic ... just a rich coppery red and fully transparent). Sometimes I use another earthy tone and rub it on gently with a cloth or tissue. If one is quick it can always be washed off again with a clean, wet cloth if it does not look OK.
Don't know if this will help at all .... actually the painting looks perfectly OK in your photograph, not dirty at all.

Thank you Lesly, I will try that. I used a transparent color called asphalt in a Mexican brand but I think it was too oily and the acrylic medium I glyed the feather with worked as a mask so I think that looks a little peculiar also.

Mary - may I suggest you take a look at the work of Ian Willding (link in my blog). He often uses words in his paintings and I think you mightlike to see his work. I am sure he would be happy to discuss this with you.
